Father Cornelius Curtin joined the Jawalakhel school to begin several years of valuable service. Students will remember his insistence on proper handwriting, and the care he put into corrections.

Life brightened up at Jawalakhel in late November, with the filming of Night Train to Kathmandu. It’s not much of a film, but those who remember the old building will enjoy seeing how the actors and actresses used it.

                  1988

Jawalakhel continued with about 760 students, 8% of whom were on scholarships. The S.L.C. results continued to be good, with one student fourth on the board.

The early part of the year was disrupted because of the movement towards democracy, and more disrupted during the aftermath, including an attack on the school which damaged the front corridor. “The resulting negotiations to settle difference and resolve relations between the two schools involved parents, staff, and students from both schools and was hoped, by St. Xavier’s, to be a model of mature resolution for future disputes between Nepalis, in or outside the school setting.” Father Law wrote this. It is worth remembering today!

                2006

This year, the Jesuits celebrated the 500th birth anniversaries of two of the first Jesuits, St. Francis Xavier, and St. Peter Faber. The Jesuits also marked the 450th death anniversary of their founder, St. Ignatius Loyola. Mr. Purna Nepali directed a pageant outlining the founding of the Society of Jesus, the live of Xavier, and the beginning of the Jesuit work in Nepal. Mr. Bhimsen Rai wrote the Nepali lyrics which Purna put to music. Ms. Mitila Sharma choreographed the dances. Professionals recorded the music, and our students were the dancers. In Nepal, we marked anniversaries of our senior Jesuits: Msgr. Anthony Sharma has been a Jesuit for fifty years, while Fr. Ludwig Stiller marked fifty years of service to Nepal. Fr. Akijiro Ooki has spent sixty years as a Jesuit and fifty of those years as a priest. He continues his work for the handicapped in Pokhara.

The year began with our usual winter break. Our teachers ran a winter day camp for our students and outsiders. There was the usual rush for class one admissions. We tested about 2,450 students for 120 seats. The academic year ended peacefully, though trouble was brewing outside our walls!

The academic year started two weeks late because of political demonstrations, but then ran with little disturbance. Godavari sent 69 students to the SLC examinations, while Jawalakhel had 63. All passed, though six had to write the optional mathematics test a second time. Our regular academic program of classes, tests, and term exams, used up most of our time and energy.

Trainers from Rato Bangala School, and Kathmandu University, helped throughout the year with our teachers' in-service training. We constantly look for better ways to help students learn, especially those who need extra guidance and those on scholarship, who need guidance in their studies. We have 73 students on full scholarship. Most of these spend five days a week in the St. Xavier's Hostel. Generous friends continue to support this program.

The highlights of our intramural sports program were the senior and junior sports days. We hosted several tournaments, and took part in many more. Our basketball players again traveled to Patna, and reached the quarter finals. The primary football players gained third place in Godavari's Moran Memorial football tournament.

Other activities ran during school days. The Science Fair was a school-wide effort with high quality presentations. We hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the Second Annual National Convention for Student Quality Circles. We ran the usual spelling, mathematics, and elocution contests for our students, and invited others to join the writing contest. Our drama, art, and music teachers staged two sets of one act plays, first for the junior school, and then for the seniors.

During the year, several of our teachers moved on, but we found good replacements. On July first, we welcomed Fr. Casper Miller back to Jawalakhel. He is now Rector, freeing Fr. Robins to concentrate on the Principal's work. The year ended with another successful Mela, and the start of a day camp and a sports camp.
